Analysis of Transport Efficiency in the UK Food Supply Chain

This is the final report of the second Transport KPI benchmarking survey conducted in the UK Food supply chain with the support of the UK government and Cold Storage and Distribution Federation. Like the original survey in 1998, it took the form of a ‘synchronised audit’ of five sets of key performance indicators across a large sample of vehicle fleets over periods of 48 hours. In the 2002 survey 53 separate vehicle fleets, comprising 3088 trailers, 1446 tractor units and 546 rigid vehicles were surveyed.   This allowed the participating companies to benchmark the efficiency of their transport operations, while providing aggregate estimates of potential reductions in operating costs, energy consumption and emissions. The study was part of the UK government’s Freight Best Practice programme.
