Alan McKinnon – Professor of Logistics

Distribution by Drone

This ‘postscript’ to the Green Logistics book considers the possible environmental impact of widespread distribution of parcels by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) or drones, as they are commonly known. Government controls on domestic airspace currently prevent such deliveries in many countries.  If these regulations are relaxed,  what is the likelihood of localised parcel delivery taking to the air and what could be the environmental consequences?  The paper begins by outlining possible operational specifications for drone delivery before assessing its practical feasibility in terms of logistics, economics and security. The possible environmental impact of mass drone delivery is assessed with reference to emissions, noise, congestion, visual intrusion and accidents and compared with that of conventional distribution by vans.
