3D Printing: Decarbonising Silver Bullet?

This short article in the magazine of the Charter Institute of Logistics and Transport asks to what extent 3D Printing might reduce the amount of freight movement and thus assist the decarbonisation of logistics. It reviews some recent publications on the subject and concludes that there is still great uncertainty about the net effect of this production technology on freight traffic levels.  As a result of recent advances in this technology, permitting the mass customisation of products at relatively low unit cost, the effect is likely to be much greater than originally thought.
