Vehicle Utilisation and Energy Efficiency in the Food Supply Chain: Full Report of the Key Performance Indicator Survey

In 1998 the UK government and Cold Storage and Distribution Federation commissioned the Logistics Research Centre at Heriot-Watt University to undertake a new type of freight transport survey designed to provide a deeper insight in the efficiency of road freight operations and to allow the participating companies to benchmark to utilisation and energy efficiency of their fleets. It was conducted the food supply chain. All the fleets were monitored over the same 48 hour using a standard set of 5 key performance indicators: vehicle fill (by weight and volume), empty running, time utilisation, energy efficiency and deviations from schedule. A total of 36 fleets comprising 1450 tractor units, 2150 trailers and 180 rigid vehicles were surveyed. This report summarises the results of this first large-scale ‘synchronised audit’ of road freight efficiency.
