Logistics, peripherality and manufacturing competitiveness
This book chapter examines the logistics implications of manufacturing in peripheral locations. It begins with a discussion of the concept of peripherality and shows that it needs to be adapted to take account of the complexity of modern logistics networks. The second section assesses the logistical penalties associated with peripherality, supplementing an anlysis of transport cost differentials with a more broadly-based review of the logistical challenges confronting ‘peripheral’ manufacturers. This analysis and review are based largely on the experience of Scottish manufacturers. Various trends in logistics, such as just-in-time replenishment and single sourcing, have been creating new problems and opportunities for these manufacturers. These trends are reviewed and an assessment made of the their effect on the relative attractiveness of peripheral regions to manufacturing investment.
