The development of retail logistics in the UK
Retail logistics is the integrated management of the range of activities required to keep retail outlets adequately replenished with supplies. It is a field in which Britain has gained a strong international reputation, partly as a result of the successful exploitation of new technology over the past twenty years. This paper reviewed the development of retail logistics in the UK up to the mid-1990s and identified a series of market trends and technological advances which were likely to affect it over the next 10-15 years. The situation in the UK was compared with that in other developed countries and an assessment made of the opportunities for the UK to ‘export’ its technical and managerial expertise in this area. In recognition of the broadening scope of retail logistics, the paper included sections on home delivery and the reverse flow of packaging and reusable handling equipment from shops.
