This paper summarises the results of a survey of planning authorities’ attitudes and policies towards warehousing development in the East Midlands region of England.   All five counties and 36 of the 40 districts participated in the survey.  The overall picture that emerged was that warehousing was neither attracting much attention nor was it the subject of clear planning policies, despite the fact that it represented roughly a quarter of commercial floorspace in the region and its floorspace had been growing almost five times faster than that of factories.  The paper argued that there was an urgent need for a re-examination of the role of warehousing as a land use and economic activity, especially as the UK was de-industrialising at the time.
