Smaller logistics service providers (LSPs) have often been accused of being slow to adopt innovations in information and communication technology (ICT), despite the fact that they bring a host of efficiency and service benefits. This research examined the adoption of ICT innovations across a sample of 153 small and medium-sized logistics providers in Italy. The survey was supplemented by a series of focus group discussions and seven case studies. The research provided empirical evidence that smaller LSPs were lagging in their adoption of ICT and found that there were many inter-related reasons for the slow rate of uptake. Having reviewed the constraints, the paper offers guidance on how new developments in ICT might be implemented more rapidly in the logistics sector.
