Use of Vehicle Telematics Systems for the Collection of Key Performance Indicator Data in Road Freight Transport
This research, undertaken as part of the UK Department for Transport’s ‘Future Integrated Transport’ programme, assessed the extent to which Vehicle Telematics Systems (VTS) could be used as a source of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) data for the measurement of road transport efficiency. These KPIs fell into five categories: vehicle capacity utilisation, empty running, time utilisation, deviations from schedule, fuel efficiency / energy intensity. Two questionnaire surveys were undertaken of suppliers and users of telematics systems in the road freight sector to which, respectively, 33 and 32 companies responded. The sample of users (i.e. road hauliers) consulted had limited awareness of the potential for telematically tracking KPIs and the benefits that this could yield. VTS suppliers could do more to promote the benefits of KPI analysis and benchmarking, though for most of those surveyed this was not being given a high priority.
