Logistics and Climate: an Assessment of Logistics' Multiple Roles in the Climate Crisis
Logistics will be absolutely critical to our management of the climate crisis. The current preoccupation with the decarbonisation of logistics has distracted attention from the other important roles that logistics will play. These range from being a cause and victim of climate change, to its involvement in adaptation, facilitating the decarbonisation of other sectors, carbon sequestration, humanitarian relief and, possibly, geo-engineering.This journal paper examines these ‘multiple roles’ and the inter-relationships between them. It reviews a wide, multi-disciplinary literature and makes the case for extending the scope of climate-related logistics research. It argues that many of the roles will stretch future logistical capabilities and make it much harder for logistics, as an activity, to meet Net Zero targets. Overall the paper aims to get the message across ‘that moving and storing stuff lies at the heart of our battle against climate change’.
