Capturing CO2: why the logistics industry needs to prepare for carbon removal at scale

This short article examines logistical challenges common to both carbon dioxide removal (CDR) from the atmosphere and carbon capture and storage (CCS) from the chimneys and flues of industrial premises.  Much attention currently focuses on the downstream movement of sequestered CO2 from the point of capture to underground burial sites.  A more holistic, end-to-end supply chain perspective is needed to assess the full logistics impact of CDR and CCS at the levels forecast to be required by 2040 and 2050 to meet Net Zero targets.

This is particularly important for the UK as it seeks to commercially exploit its extensive geologic storage capacity for captured CO2 and to achieve 50% local content ‘in CCS value chains from 2030’.   The article examines recent developments in the UK but also raises issues of general relevance to future of carbon capture
