Shopping trip or home delivery - which has the smaller carbon footprint?
This paper in the magazine of the UK Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport presents the preliminary results of a comparison of the carbon footprints of conventional and online retailing for small, non-food items. It suggests that, when considering only the last-mile stage of the retail supply chain, home delivery is likely to emit less CO2 per item than shopping by car or bus.
