Keynote address to 11th International Workshop in Sustainable Road Freight

I was a keynote speaker at the 11th International Workshop of the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight and the first to be held outside the UK.   The event was hosted by Tongji University in Shanghai. As I was not able to attend in person I submitted a recording of my presentation. It was entitled:  ‘Net Zero Road Freight Logistics: extending the research horizon‘. You can download a copy of my presentation, with weblinks to all the relevant data sources. The recording of the presentation is available on YouTube.

In the presentation I argue that there is a need to broaden the scope of research on Net Zero road freight logistics.  It gave me an opportunity to report on several studies that I’ve done or contributed to over the past year on what I’m calling climate logistics. In addition to reviewing global and European trends in road freight decarbonisation, the talk recommends, among other things:

- the inclusion of road infrastructure emissions in the carbon footprinting of trucking

- analysis of the road freight impacts of the construction of renewable energy infrastructure, adaptation to climate change and carbon sequestration

- greater understanding of the reasons for the empty running and over-loading of trucks being so difficult to reduce

- modelling of the inter-dependencies between the various roles that road freight logistics will play in the climate crisis.
