Alan McKinnon – Professor of Logistics

13 December 2024

Day at the University of Cambridge

I spent a memorable day at the University of Cambridge as a guest of Professor David Cebon, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight (SRF). I worked with David on the establishment of the SRF in 2011-12, bringing together Cambridge University’s expertise in vehicle engineering and a knowledge of the managerial and policy aspects of road haulage and logistics at Heriot-Watt University, where I was based at the time .  Under the joint directorship of David in Cambridge and Professor Phil Greening at Heriot-Watt, SRF has become one of the main global centres for research on the environmental sustainability of road freight transport with partner institutions in China, India, South Africa and Colombia.

I gave a guest lecture to academics and doctoral students from the Department of Engineering and Institute of Manufacturing.  My theme was ‘Managing the Climate Crisis: the under-estimated role of logistics.  This gave me an opportunity to consolidate material from several other presentations that I’ve given over the past year to a variety of audiences in different countries.

In the evening I was honoured to be David’s guest at the Sir Thomas Smith’s Feast in Queens College, Cambridge.
