Smart Freight Week 2025, Amsterdam

I joined over 800 delegates at the fourth Smart Freight Week, organised by the Smart Freight Centre in Kromhouthal, Amsterdam, on the final day of the event. The numbers attending this event have doubled every year, making it now the largest gathering of specialists in sustainable freight transport and logistics. It comprised 63 sessions at which a broad range of topics were discussed including emission measurement, emission reduction targets, alternative fuels, market-based measures, green freight schemes and road freight decarbonisation.  Numerous businesses, NGOs, industry associations, consultancies, government agencies and academic research teams were represented, drawn from over 50 countries.  This level of attendance and the richness of the discussions, both in the formal sessions and informal networking, confirms the Smart Freight Centre’s role as the main global NGO promoting the decarbonisation of freight transport.

I made two contributions:

  1. As a member of a panel judging the ‘innovation pitches’ of seven start-up businesses with products or services supporting the decarbonisation of road freight transport. Congratulations to k2.mobility which got our highest rating.

  2. In the closing session, when Suzanne Greene of Dow, Kaisa Tikk of Maersk and I were given the opportunity to reflect on the event and more generally discuss the decarbonisation of freight transport.  The moderator, Rik Arends of the SFC, invited us, among other things, to identify issues meriting more attention and topics that could now be dropped from the agenda.
