Articles on Logistics Decarbonisation
A short article that I wrote about the current state of logistics decarbonisation against the backdrop of geopolitical upheavals and accelerating climate change has just been published in two versions. An English version, referring to the UK situation, has appeared in the May issue of Focus, the monthly magazine of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).
A shorter version in German has been published in the ZERO: Emission-free Logistics magazine.
A third version, in English, contains citations to the various references and data sources.
In all the versions I argue that despite political and corporate ‘push-back’ on policies to cut carbon emissions, efforts to decarbonize need to be intensified, particularly those related to freight modal shift and asset utilisation. There needs to be greater recognition that ‘the logistics sector cannot rely solely on the energy transition to deliver the deep reductions in carbon emissions necessary over the next few decades.’ As this transition will be relatively slow and costly, the other decarbonisation levers need to be pulled more aggressively in the short to medium term. This can be done at a lower carbon mitigation and in ways that reduce the total amount of logistics-related energy that will ultimately need to be ‘defossilised’
