PhD Workshop at the Universidad de los Andes, Bogota
The third in series of international PhD workshops supported by the Kuehne Foundation’s Learn Logistics was held at the Universidad de los Andes School of Management (UASM) in Bogota between the 5th and 10th October, 2025. I had the pleasure of being one of professors contributing to the workshop along with Gordon Wilmsmeier, Kai Hoberg, Marcus Thiell, Julio Villalobos Contreras and Bart Van Hoof. During the week there was lively discussion, in a logistics context, of the core topics of sustainability, digitalisation, innovation, economic development and the inter-relationship between rigour and impact in academic research. It was also good to discuss on an individual basis with the students the range of very interesting PhD projects represented at the event. UASM organised visits to interesting places in and around Bogota to give us an insight into Colombia’s environment, economy and recent history.
In my half-day session I argued that we need to extend the ‘climate logistics’ research horizon well beyond decarbonisation and explored some of the related challenges. We also discussed an updated version of my Scenario 2035 teaching case in which I speculate about the combined impact of climatic and geopolitical trends on the management of global supply chains over the next decade.
