Farewell Event at Kuehne Logistics University

On the 7th November, Kuehne Logistics University organized a Farewell Event for me and my colleague Professor Rod Franklin to celebrate our long service to the university which is drawing to a close.   Since I joined KLU in January 2012 as the first Dean of Programs and Head of Logistics, the university has become a real academic success story with strong reputations for research, teaching and industrial outreach.

The Event was actually renamed ‘Not Really a Farewell’ in recognition of the fact that both Rod and I are likely to retain a close association with KLU and continue to support its development in various ways as Emeritus Professors.  In my case, future links will be mainly with the Executive Education Department and the Centre for Sustainable Logistics and Supply Chains (CSLS).

The event was well attended by a mix of faculty, administrative staff, doctoral students and external guests, including Martin Wilhaus, former managing director of the Kuehne Foundation, Dr Andre Kreie, Director of Global Logistics Education in the Foundation and Dr Joerg Wiese, CEO of the Kuehne Climate Centre.

During the event I donated to the university the Yamaha keyboard that I bought within a few weeks of starting at KLU and which has helped to relax me during my years in Hamburg.  In response to a request to play something on it, I performed what I called my Farewell Medley comprising a mixture of classical, jazz, traditional and popular pieces, partly to demonstrate the instrument’s capabilities.  I subsequently posted on YouTube a recording of the medley played on my acoustic Yahama piano at home in Edinburgh. The various pieces are listed here.   I also had the pleasure of accompanying Lene Jensen Moeller, Head of Information Management and Library at KLU, who sang a couple of songs, including ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’, an appropriate tune for the occasion.
