Alan McKinnon – Professor of Logistics

European Supply Chain and Logistics Summit

Barcelona, Spain, June 2015

The latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shows the deep reductions in carbon emissions that will have to be achieved to keep future global temperature increases within acceptable levels.

As a lead author of the transport chapter of this report, Professor McKinnon explained what this meant for the management of logistics and supply chains.  Although some companies were successfully cutting the carbon intensity of their operations, he argued, the strong underlying growth in demand for logistical activities was increasing their total carbon footprint and this trend was going to be difficult to reverse.

Professor McKinnon examined the main options for getting logistics on to a decarbonisation pathway that would meet long term carbon reduction targets.
