Comparison of the Environmental Impact of Rail and Road Freight Operations: A Review and Analysis of Currently Available Statistics
Government freight modal shift policies are generally based on the assumption that moving goods by rail is better for the environment than transporting them by road. This study used available data to compare the environmental impact of rail and road freight operations in the UK and thereby assess the extent of rail’s environmental advantage.
