Alan McKinnon – Professor of Logistics

Logistics and the environment

This book chapter provides a state-of-the-art review of green logistics in the early years of this century. The book as whole is concerned with the environmental impact of transport. This chapter argues that to explore all the options for reducing this impact in the freight sector, it is necessary to take account of wider ‘logistical trends and trade-offs’ and the restructuring of companies’ supply chains. The options considered included in reducing the freight transport intensity of economies, reconfiguring production and distribution systems, optimising vehicle routing, switching transport mode, relaxing JIT pressures on order fulfilment, improving ‘space-efficiency’ of handling equipment and relaxing legal constraints on the size and weight of freight vehicles. The chapter also includes a section on city logistics.
