Environmentally sustainable city logistics: minimising urban freight emissions
The environmental problems posed by freight transport emissions are particularly acute in urban areas. In towns and cities high levels of logistical activity and high population densities coincide. This book chapter examines the level of pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions in urban areas and explores the options for reducing them. These options are classified into five categories: switching urban vans and trucks to low emission energy, improving their energy efficiency, using their carrying capacity much more effectively, shifting urban freight to lower carbon modes such as cargo-cycles and reducing the overall demand for freight distribution.
